PUTRAJAYA: Home Minister , Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail , confirmed that there was no assault incident involving detainees under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 ( SOSMA ) at Sungai Buloh Prison . According to him, this was reported by the Prisons Director-General who conducted a follow-up investigation following claims of such an incident.
“I have received the full report and the assault incident did not occur,” he said when met after launching the National Registration Department Innovation Awards 2024 here today. Earlier, a news portal reported that the wife of a SOSMA detainee lodged a police report at the Sungai Buloh Police District Headquarters, Selangor, claiming that her husband was beaten. Elaborating further, Saifuddin said that the matter was handed over to the police for a detailed investigation as a police report had been filed regarding the incident. “If a report has been made, the work of the police is to conduct an investigation but the immediate feedback from the Prisons Director-General informed that there was no (assault) incident. “What happened was a strike incident (involving detainees), when they went on strike for days and did not take food or drink. Their physical bodies also felt weak. So, when they were brought to the hospital, they had to be brought in a wheelchair and so on,” he said. He also stressed that his ministry and the Prisons Department would not conceal anything and would allow the police to conduct the investigation. Following the strike action by the family members of SOSMA detainees outside the prison, Saifuddin said that the investigation papers regarding the gathering had been categorized as ‘No Further Action’ (NFA). He said that the full report of the incident had also been brought to the attention of the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. On February 9, media reported that police had opened an investigation paper regarding the gathering and hunger strike held by several individuals, believed to be family members of detainees under SOSMA in front of Sungai Buloh Prison. – UTUSA
