Nigeria n health journalists are leading the charge in raising awareness about the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance ( AMR ). As part of the 2024 World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW), which took place from November 18 to 24, there were key events held in different parts of Nigeria . In Enugu, an art event titled 'Microbe Madness' featured an exhibition, a drama performance, and an animation premiere.
This was organized by freelance health journalist Rose-Camile Aneke, who is also the convener of Art for Health Naija. The event aimed to educate the public about AMR. Meanwhile, in Imo State, a workshop was organized for 35 health journalists from various mediums to educate them about the dangers of AMR. The theme for the 2024 WAAW is ‘Educate. Advocate. Act now,’ emphasizing the importance of raising awareness about AMR and promoting best practices to combat this global health threat. AMR happens when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites become resistant to the medicines used to treat infections, reducing their effectiveness
