Newly sworn in NSW Liberal senator Maria Kovacic says the party must help Australians build economic prosperity through home ownership.

The Coalition should consider a cap on negative gearing for investment properties and working with the states to replace stamp duty, a NSW senator says, part of plans to improve housing supply and reform the tax system.

After replacing the late Jim Molan in parliament in May, the daughter of Croatian migrants said she wanted to pursue an agenda of opportunity in parliament, to help Australians achieve their own goals.“The boom in house prices is driving wealth inequality between property owners and renters, and exacerbating an intergenerational inequity between young and old,” she said.

“The federal government must do more to ensure the supply of homes is increased. The key is to incentivise state and local governments that are prepared to take on more housing – offering funding for transport, better infrastructure and protection of existing open spaces.”
