No wind farms have been approved in NSW since May 2021, meaning a big catch-up is required to put the state back on track for 2030 targets.
Wind farm developers in NSW say their projects are being stalled by approval delays, community objections and slow connections to the power grid, putting at risk investments needed to help retire coal and reach Australia’s renewable energy targets.
“We are seeing quite a number of solar projects getting approved and through the system but not wind projects. Queensland looks good, Victoria fluctuates but hardly any last two years. The big issue is in NSW ... It’s just really, really difficult.” Certainly, the capacity proposed by some projects is off the scale compared to earlier projects, with 700 to 800 megawatts not out of the ordinary.
”The government is working with proponents on ways to accelerate its delivery as well as ensuring reliability in the approval process,” Ms Sharpe said.A DPE spokeswoman partly blamed the situation on a lack of adequate information provided by project proponents. “Planning processes balance a range of considerations and as we accelerate the transition to renewables, those processes will inevitably require revision,” he said. “The NSW Government has recognised the challenges and is now working closely and productively with industry to resolve the issues.
