Hank Dugie defeated two opponents in the race to be the GOP nominee for county treasurer. The League City council member campaigned on the idea that the treasurer’s office should be abolished and its duties be taken over by other county offices. No Democrat is seeking the treasurer office.and won a spot as Galveston County’s newest treasurer on a platform calling to eliminate the office, said he won’t take the $117,000 salary the position has historically drawn.
“I think electing to forgo a salary could help build a level of trust with the taxpayers and citizens of Galveston County,” Dugie said. “When you’re trying to do something kind of unique like this, having that trust of the voters is important.”, arguing voters should do away with the office and other county offices should take over its duties.Galveston County already employs internal and outside auditors who can handle many of the office’s duties, Dugie argues.
Dugie is the latest in a long conversation in Texas surrounding whether or not the office is necessary. Several counties across Texas do not have a treasurer position, including Bexar and Tarrant. The Galveston County treasurer’s office has historically had a staff of about four and managed a budget of about $700,000, Dugie said. That number will be lower this year, because the county reduced the staff by two employees and Dugie has decided not to draw a salary.
