A sharp spike in Greenland's temperatures since 1995 show the giant northern island has reached 1.5 degrees Celsius warmer than its 20th-century average, its hottest in more than 1,000 years, new ice core data show.
abc.net.au/news/greenland-temperatures-warmest-in-over-1000-years-new-data/101870912A sharp spike in Greenland temperatures since 1995 shows the giant northern island is 1.5 degrees Celsius hotter than its 20th-century average, the warmest it has been in more than 1,000 years, new ice core data show.
She expects the temperature rise to continue as Greenland's ice sheet and glaciers have been melting faster recently. The ice cores are used to make a chart of proxy temperatures for Greenland, running from the year 1000 to 2011. That warming spike also mirrors a sudden rise in the amount of water running off from Greenland's melting ice, the study finds.
Ms Hoerhold's team drilled five new cores near old cores, so as to match established ice core records.
