SEREMBAN: The public in the state have been urged to defer all events involving large crowds to help check the spread of Covid-19.

State Health, Environment, Cooperatives and Consumerism Committee chairman S. Veerapan said similarly, religious programmes where a large turnout is expected should also be postponed.

"We are currently experiencing a major health problem, and it is my hope that the people would take the necessary precautions. "This is necessary as the rate of infections are spreading rapidly," he said in a statement on Monday . Veerapan said the number of cases worldwide has also spiked, which resulted in the World Health Organisation classifying Covid-19 as a pandemic."All programmes, whether it is organised by the private sector or the government, should be deferred until the situation returns to normal," he added.Forty-two patients have since recovered, but nine are receiving treatment at the intensive care units as they need respiratory assistance.
