Of the six actors who've played James Bond thus far, many of them were already a little too old according to a rule from the Ian Fleming books.
According to an Ian Fleming rule from the James Bond books, many of the actors who played the role were too old. The 007 featured in Fleming's novels and the one seen in the Bond movies aren't necessarily the same character. The rougher edges of Bond were sanded down when he made the leap to movies, though his womanizing, boozing and talent for killing remained intact.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Of course, Connery proved perfect casting, and over 60 years on, still defines the spy for fans of the James Bond movies. In the years that followed, five more actors have played 007, with Daniel Craig being the most recent. Casting for James Bond 26 will likely see an actor in the early to mid-30s inheriting the mantle, ensuring they can continue on with the physically taxing part for at least a few movies.
That means he already should have retired as a 00 Agent, and that's only compounded by the fact Moore was 58 when he starred in his final outing A View To A Kill. Many of the Bond actors speed past Fleming's retirement age during their run; Pierce Brosnan was 41 when he began and 49 when he ended with Die Another Day, while Daniel Craig was around 51 when he shot No Time To Die. In the latter's case, Bond actually is retired when the story begins.
The Only James Bond Actors To "Retire" In Time A couple of James Bond performers managed to get out of the role before the mandatory retirement age kicked in. By virtue of the fact On Her Majesty's Secret Service was his only appearance, Lazenby exited the role at 29. Timothy Dalton was 41 when he appeared in The Living Daylights and 43 in Licence To Kill. Sadly, the latter proved to be his final outing, with a lawsuit keeping the franchise off movie screens for six years.
