Datuk Seri Najib Razak , during his testimony in the RM2.28 billion 1Malaysia Development Bhd ( 1MDB ) trial, stated that he possessed limited experience in corporate governance before entering politics. When questioned by his lead counsel, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, about his professional background, Najib clarified that while he had interacted with individuals from the corporate sector, he primarily focused on government policy and its implementation.
He characterized himself as more of a politician and government figure rather than a corporate executive. The 71-year-old former Prime Minister's testimony concluded after Shafee completed his re-examination. The defense also presented Catherine Nicholas, a former Senior Assistant Registrar at the Kuala Lumpur High Court, to verify appeal records related to Najib and Arul Kanda Kandasamy, the former 1MDB CEO, concerning the 1MDB audit tampering trial. In October 2023, Najib was instructed by the High Court to present his defense on four charges of using his position to receive RM2.28 billion in gratification from 1MDB funds and 21 counts of money laundering related to the same amount.
