Hong Kong Cardinal Calls for End to Food Waste, Linking It to Human RightsHong Kong Cardinal Calls for End to Food Waste, Linking It to Human RightsCardinal Joseph Zen Ze-kiun of Hong Kong has urged people to stop wasting food, arguing that it aligns with respecting human rights and caring for God’s creation. He wrote an article about the dignity of food based on his observations at several Christmas dinners, noting how much food went uneaten at these large events. He posed the question, 'Does food have rights?' just as human rights, animal rights, children’s rights, consumer rights, and patient rights exist. He believes that for Christians, rights stem from the understanding that God is the creator of all life, humans are made in God’s image, and their dignity comes from God’s love. Zen emphasizes that privilege comes with responsibility, and we are called to care for God’s creation.
