WA medical ventures no longer limited to interstate or overseas investors for viability, says OncoRes breast cancer tech innovator Katherine Giles.

Already a subscriber? In 2016, Katharine Giles was warned against attempting to build medical device company OncoRes in Western Australia, where investors preferred to, and told she would need to look interstate or overseas for capital and long-term viability.

Almost a decade later, Dr Giles’ company has raised more than $30 million and is manufacturing medical equipment with new, cancer-detecting technology to assist surgeons from a lab in Perth’s suburbs.“It actually reduces our cost of goods if we bring the manufacturing in house rather than buying some of our components already completed,” Dr Giles said.

Dr Giles said most surgeons were currently forced to rely on their touch to differentiate healthy breast tissue from the cancer, resulting in 20 per cent of women, on average, having cancer left in their body and required to return for more surgery.
