JOHOR BARU: The Johor Fire and Rescue Department will step up patrols along public beaches around Kota Tinggi following an influx in the number of visitors.

State acting director Mohd Rizal Buang said this was a precautionary measure in view of a recent drowning case in Port Dickson.

“Due to the present holiday season, there has been an increase in people spending their time at public beaches in Kota Tinggi,” he said.“We have two hotspots in Kota Tinggi, namely Pantai Batu Layar and Pantai Tanjung Balau, so these will be our focus areas. Asked to comment on some people taking pictures atop the rock structures beyond the red flags at Pantai Tanjung Balau, Mohd Rizal said these spots posed a high risk.“They may also become trapped if they do not return to the shore before the high tide returns,” he said.

Tourism Johor director Suhairi Hashim said the rocky section of the beach is a popular photo location.
