Anthony Albanese has taken aim at Peter Dutton’s consistency over party policy after the Leader of the Opposition backflipped on his pledge for a second referendum.

In the run-up to the Voice referendum held at the weekend, Mr Dutton said if it failed to pass he would hold a separate vote targeting constitutional recognition of Indigenous Australians if he were elected Prime Minister.

Mr Albanese pivoted to launch an attack on the Opposition Leader over his changing position by calling into question his appearances on Sunrise and the Today Show on Tuesday morning. “More anger from the Leader of the Opposition. More anger. He didn’t just say it once, he said that remains our policy. And he went on to say there is nothing new or tricky or changed here. Then he changed it when he went on the Today Show. He cannot keep a straight line between Channel Seven and Channel Nine. You flick the channel daily to get a different answer. You get two referendums."

Peter Dutton has been accused of flip-flopping after backtracking on his idea to hold a second referendum. Whether people agree with you or not, that’s another that’s another point. But you said you were going to do it, if you got in.
