Anthony Albanese refused to discuss a treaty while Peter Dutton dumped his plan to push for recognition after the resounding defeat of the Voice to parliament.
Anthony Albanese has refused to recommit to his promise of a treaty with Indigenous people and the creation of a truth-telling process, followingOpposition leader Peter Dutton also drew a line under his intentions by dumping his promise to hold a referendum on just the Constitutional recognition off Indigenous people, should he be elected.
Last year, the government began a formal process and allocated funding to secure a treaty and create a truth-telling mechanism, known as a Makarrata Commission, to be pursued after the referendum. It was not contingent on the referendum passing. “I think it’s a good thing that people come together, and I made that very clear on Saturday night that that is my position.
Mr Dutton promised before the vote that if it failed, he would convene a referendum if elected because there was widespread support for just constitutional recognition. He said he would keep listening to Indigenous people, even if there was no official Voice. He has already ruled out legislating a Voice.
