The arrival of monsoon season in Malaysia has brought intense wave activity, capturing the attention of social media users. Videos showcasing the power of the waves, particularly one where a large driftwood is carried ashore by a wave, have sparked discussions about coastal safety. The incident underscores the potential dangers of large waves and the importance of caution when near the coast during monsoon season.

The monsoon season in Malaysia has officially commenced on November 5th, 2024, and is expected to persist until March. According to the Malaysia n Meteorological Department (Met Malaysia ), five to seven episodes of heavy rainfall are anticipated throughout this period. Several states, including Kelantan, Pahang, Johor, Sarawak, Sabah, and Terengganu, are expected to be affected.

Recently, videos circulating on social media showcased the power of the monsoon waves, with vehicles on the Kuala Terengganu Suspension Bridge being splashed by large waves. The overflowing water reached the roadway, even splashing onto the opposite lane, highlighting the force of the waves. One such video, posted on TikTok by a woman named Fathima (@fathimafawwaz), captured a dramatic incident at Pantai Geliga Bukit in Kemaman, Terengganu. The video showed visitors enjoying the beach scenery, with some, including Fathima's husband, recording the large waves. However, the waves suddenly intensified, catching everyone off guard. One powerful wave struck Fathima's husband, and to everyone's astonishment, it carried a large piece of driftwood towards the shore. Thankfully, another piece of wood that had been lying on the sand blocked the driftwood, preventing it from hitting Fathima's husband. Fathima, relieved and amused, commented, 'We were enjoying recording the waves when suddenly a huge wave hit. It carried a piece of driftwood. Alhamdulillah, everyone is safe. We are still alive. But I don't know whether to laugh or be scared. My husband is safe, and I thank God for that.'Fathima also mentioned in her post that three teenagers and three young boys were present at the scene, and thankfully, everyone remained safe. The video quickly went viral, with viewers expressing concern over the visitors' proximity to the powerful waves. Many urged caution, reminding people not to venture too close to the water's edge during rough weather. Others shared their own experiences with large waves, emphasizing the importance of being aware of the potential dangers. A recent incident in Indonesia highlighted the severity of such waves. An 18-year-old girl was tragically swept away by a large wave while taking pictures near the cliffs of Pantai Semeti, Lombok. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of the sea and the importance of exercising extreme caution when near the coast, especially during monsoon season. Always heed warnings and pay attention to flags displayed on the beach. Red flags indicate hazardous conditions due to strong winds, rough seas, or large waves, posing a significant risk of drowning. They serve as a clear signal to stay out of the water during such times
