Two Malaysian fishermen who went missing at sea after their boat engine failed were found safe in Indonesia over 1,500 km from home.

Two Malaysian fishermen, Asamadi Omar, 55, and Zulkefli Mad, 46, were found safe in Bengkalis, Indonesia after their boat broke down and drifted at sea over 1,500 km away from home. Batu Pahat maritime zone director Maritime Commander Mohammad Zaini Zainal said the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) received a report of the missing fishermen from the police at 11am yesterday. An MMEA boat was dispatched to carry out a search and rescue operation.

The fishermen's family later informed the police at 6pm that they had been found safe in Indonesian waters. The boat drifted into Indonesian waters after an engine failure, covering a distance of about 810 nautical miles (1,500 km). MMEA acknowledged the assistance provided by the agencies involved in the operation and also thanked the Indonesian authorities that assisted the victims
