The state government is evaluating the proposal to permanently close a 2.3km stretch of road in Banda Hilir, Melaka, to vehicular traffic. The Vehicle-Free Zone, currently closed from Friday to Sunday, has proven beneficial for local businesses and communities due to increased foot traffic. The decision on permanent closure will be announced by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh following a comprehensive study.
The proposed permanent closure of roads in the Vehicle-Free Zone at Banda Hilir , Melaka , is still under review. Senior state executive councillor for Housing, Local Government, Climate Change, Drainage and Disaster Management Datuk Rais Yasin stated that any decision regarding the matter would be announced by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh. He emphasized that there is no predetermined timeline for the implementation of the permanent closure.
However, he expressed confidence that if the study reveals benefits, the proposal will move forward. Rais explained that the Vehicle-Free Zone, currently closed from Friday to Sunday, has positively impacted the local community and businesses due to a surge in visitors. He was speaking at the 'Jom Berkhatan' free circumcision program for the Paya Rumput and Sungai Udang state constituencies at the Sungai Udang State Assembly Development and Coordination Committee (Japerun) office. The event saw the participation of 120 children aged between six and 12. Previously, Ab Rauf had announced the state government's intention to completely close the 2.3km route from the Stadthuys building to the Taming Sari Tower. This move, he stated, aims to mitigate vehicle emissions, safeguard heritage buildings, and alleviate traffic congestion, particularly on weekends
