Melaka health authorities have shut down 50 food outlets last year due to alarmingly low hygiene standards. A team of inspectors conducted 6,047 inspections across food-related businesses, issuing closure notices to 42 restaurants and eateries and four canteens.
Melaka health authorities have taken action against 50 food outlets last year, citing 'extremely' unsatisfactory hygiene conditions. The state health department director, Dr Ruzita Mustaffa, revealed that these establishments were among 6,047 food-related sectors inspected by her team between January and December of last year. Of those inspected, 42 restaurants and eateries and four canteens located in supermarkets and factories were issued closure notices.
Dr Ruzita explained that these actions were taken under Section 11 of the Food Act 1983 due to the disappointing hygiene levels found at the premises. She further stated that since the beginning of this year, two food premises have been ordered to close and 89 have been inspected. In addition to the closures, Dr Ruzita disclosed that 70 notices of compounds and 26 fines totalling RM16,450 were issued. However, only RM5,025 has been paid to date. During a Chinese New Year food safety inspection at a supermarket in Pandan Malim on Thursday, January 23, Dr Ruzita's team detected the owner selling rotten, mouldy, and blackened fruits. Upon inspection, the team found deteriorated fruits like papaya, dragon fruit, apples, and lemons displayed on shelves, posing a health risk to consumers. They also discovered food packaging products lacking the manufacturer's address and expired canned products. As a result of the operation, a total of 101 items were seized, including 18 dented and rusty canned foods, 34 mouldy and spoiled foods, 39 labelling offences, and 10 expired items, with a total value of approximately RM700
