The turf war between medical and allied health professions is a symptom of Australia’s public health system having been dreamt up in very different times, writes Tanveer Ahmed.

The central role of the doctor in our health system is under threat like never before.

Psychologists are up in arms about having the number of subsidised consultations cut from 20 to the pre-pandemic limit of 10. Their industrial fuse was further inflamed by psychiatrists Patrick McGorry and Ian Hickie supporting the government’s cuts in the name of equity.Meanwhile, media outlets damaged the profession with a campaign last year against alleged overservicing by doctors, a contributing factor to the Medicare review just announced by the federal government.

Meanwhile, the ownership model of medicine has drastically changed. From a cohort of small business administrators, a large proportion are now run by private equity. The AMA’s Robson laments that “this is an unfortunate outcome of systems that reward churn”. The billing item numbers encouraging multidisciplinary input have not proved successful in providing co-ordinated care, ideally under one roof.
