PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has recorded a statement from a suspect over false allegations made against the country's royals and leaders on Facebook.

This follows after the MCMC with the cooperation of the Commercial Crime Investigation Department and Melaka police raided the house of the suspect on Thursday in Bemban, Melaka.

MCMC Enforcement Division chief Datuk Mohd Shafie Harun said that the raid was carried out after public complaints. He added that based on MCMC's initial investigations, the suspect had used a Facebook account and a blog under the name"Abu Leman". "Several equipment including a laptop, a modem, a smartphone, a SIM card, and a memory card were confiscated in the raid to help in investigations.The case is being investigated under Section 223 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which upon conviction, carries a fine of up to RM50,000, up to a year in prison, or both.

Mohd Shafie added that the commission will not compromise on the dissemination of fake news, and stern action will be taken against those involved.
