Patrols of the contested waterway will start within months as Anthony Albanese prepares to upgrade diplomatic ties with a key South-East Asian nation wary of China.
Australia and the Philippines will start joint maritime patrols in the heavily contested South China Sea within months, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese poised to upgrade diplomatic ties as the South-East Asian nation increasingly pushes back against China.
Defence Minister Richard Marles meets President Ferdinand Marcos jnr during military drills in the Philippines. About 2200 troops from both nations took part in Exercise Alon, including RAAF F-35 fighter jets, HMAS Canberra and HMAS Anzac and Australian tanks. “Doing joint sails is something that we have been keen to pursue now for some time. We are really pleased with the progress of those discussions and we expect the first of those joint patrols will happen in the not too distant future.”Mr Marles’ visit sets the scene for Mr Albanese’s trip to Manila for talks with Mr Marcos in a fortnight, where the two leaders could announce that negotiations to elevate bilateral ties to the level of Strategic Partnership have been concluded.
