A 23-year-old man, Afif Jazimim Jamaluddin, was sentenced to 12 years in prison for setting multiple fires in Kupang, Baling, Kedah , between December 24, 2024, and January 2, 2025. Afif pleaded guilty to three charges of mischief by fire involving five motorcycles. The fires he ignited tragically spread, destroying approximately a dozen homes and claiming the lives of seven pet cats.

Afif was sentenced to four years in prison for each charge, with the sentences to run consecutively, starting from his arrest on January 20, 2025. The charges were brought under Section 435 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 14 years and a fine. While the prosecution urged the court to impose a just punishment, Afif's lawyer, Intan Nursyafina Baharudin, requested leniency, citing his guilty plea and remorse. She also pointed out that Afif is unemployed and a 'slow learner,' who has been bullied in the past. The court heard that Afif confessed to setting the fires as an act of revenge for being bullied. Deputy public prosecutor Amirul Halimi Md Salleh informed the court that further investigations are underway regarding other fire cases linked to Afif. During the sentencing, Afif remained calm and did not appeal. None of his family members were present in the courtroom
