PORT DICKSON: A 34-year-old businessman has been fined RM5,500 by the Magistrate's Court here for drink-driving.

A. Devarajan, who was detained after he was involved in a minor accident near here around 4.45pm on July 25, pleaded guilty after the charge was read to him before magistrate Siti Huzaifah Abd Talib on Tuesday .

The magistrate also ordered the accused to serve five months in jail if he was unable to pay the fine.He was charged under Section 45A of the Road Transport Act 1987, which provides for a fine of between RM1,000 and RM6,000 or a jail term not exceeding 12 months.According to the facts of the case, Devarajan was involved in a minor accident with another car driven by a 43-year-old businessman while heading towards Lukut from Teluk Kemang.

A police team which arrived at the scene questioned both the drivers and found that the accused might have been driving under the influence of alcohol. They took him to the police station for a breathalyser test, and his blood alcohol content was found to be 143mg/100ml.Devarajan was detained and remanded for three days.
