A 24-year-old Malaysian man was fined RM3,500 for recording a video of an Indonesian woman changing clothes in a fitting room. The Magistrate's Court also sentenced the man to six months in jail if he fails to pay the fine.

A man was fined RM3,500 by the Magistrate's Court here today after pleading guilty to outraging the modesty of an Indonesian woman by recording a video of the victim changing clothes in the fitting room of a sporting goods store last Friday. Magistrate Aina Azahra Arifin also ordered Wan Muhammad Haziq Danial Wan Ali, 24, to be jailed for six months if he failed to pay the fine. The man was charged with committing the act at the premises located in a shopping mall here at 9.20 pm on January 25.

The charge was brought under Section 509 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of five years' imprisonment or a fine, or both. Earlier, the man, who was unrepresented by counsel, pleaded for a minimum fine on the grounds that he was unemployed and had to support his family. However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Hench Goh suggested a fitting sentence should be imposed as a lesson, taking into consideration the public interest factor
