The Malaysian government's allocation of over RM20 million to 63 Chinese private schools has ignited a debate on social media, with some questioning the prioritization of private institutions over public schools, particularly those in underserved areas.
The Malaysian Federal Government recently approved an allocation of over RM20 million for 63 Chinese private schools across the country this year. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that RM19.84 million will be distributed among 62 Chinese private schools nationwide, while RM1 million will be specifically provided to Jit Sin Independent High School in Bukit Mertajam, Penang.
Anwar stated that this allocation reflects the government's appreciation for the contributions of Chinese private schools in Malaysia. He emphasized their commitment to adapting to the curriculum by respecting the national language and upholding the dignity of the people. However, the announcement sparked controversy on social media, with many expressing their disapproval of the allocation. Some argued that government funding should prioritize public schools, particularly those in Sabah, Sarawak, and rural areas, instead of private institutions. They questioned the need for government assistance to private schools, highlighting that their primary purpose is to generate profit. Others countered that funding for national schools and religious schools might also be allocated, but it's not being as widely discussed online. They urged for a more comprehensive discussion about school funding across all types of institutions. According to Budget 2025, RM1 billion will be dedicated to maintaining all types of schools, focusing on improving the dilapidated conditions of national schools, religious schools, special education schools, schools in military camps, and Chinese and Tamil national schools. An additional RM1 billion will be allocated for upgrading 543 schools, primarily in Sabah and Sarawak, and constructing 44 new schools.
