Police in Malaysia and Thailand have apprehended a key member of a drug smuggling syndicate operating across the border. The Malaysian suspect's arrest has led to the identification of the syndicate's leader.
Police in Kelantan have identified the ringleader of a drug smuggling syndicate following the arrest of a Malaysian suspect in Pekan Sungai Golok, southern Thailand, on December 30. Kelantan police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the suspect from Penang is now on the police radar. The 24-year-old man arrested by Thai police recently is also believed to have played a key role in the syndicate’s operations.
He said the suspect, who was arrested, hails from Kelantan and has a close relationship with a woman from Laos, believed to be his accomplice. They are believed to be involved in smuggling drugs supplied from Thailand. Comm Yusoff said Malaysian and Thailand police would work closely to monitor and bust these syndicates. On Sunday (January 5), Sungai Golok (known as Kolok in Thailand) district police chief Col Pol Jadsadavit Ingprapan confirmed the arrest of a Malaysian on suspicion of smuggling an assortment of drugs valued at RM120,000 in a raid on premises in Sungai Golok on December 30. He was quoted as saying that police seized 1,943 ecstasy pills, 1,510 Erimin 5 pills and other types of drugs
