A Parliamentary committee in Malaysia has recommended expanding sex education in schools to include topics like 'good touch' and 'bad touch,' paedophilia, body shaming, and sexually transmitted diseases.
A Parliamentary Special Select Committee (PSSC) in Malaysia has called for an expansion of the Reproductive and Social Health Education (PEERS) syllabus. The PSSC on Women, Children and Community Development believes the revised curriculum should include lessons on 'good touch' and 'bad touch,' paedophilia, body shaming, and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
The committee emphasized the need for comprehensive education on protecting children from sexual exploitation, empowering parents and teachers to identify early signs of paedophilia, and ensuring children understand their physical and emotional limits. They also stressed the importance of addressing body shaming and promoting self-confidence by emphasizing the appreciation of one's natural body. Strengthening education on STDs, including information on causes, transmission, symptoms, long-term effects, and precautionary measures, is another key recommendation. The PSSC also urges the Education Ministry to include topics on children's rights, laws regarding sexual crimes, and punishments for such offenses, particularly in cases of mutual attraction among minors. Additionally, the ministry should review reproductive health topics to ensure age-appropriateness and focus on teacher expertise
