The Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN) is committed to bolstering security measures along the Malaysia-Thailand border in Kelantan to combat smuggling and cross-border criminal activities, as stated by Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. He emphasized the need for full support for the initiatives led by Kelantan Police Chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat to strengthen security in areas spanning Sungai Golok to Jeli.
This over 100-kilometre border zone has long been a known hotspot for illicit activities such as smuggling, human trafficking, and drug trade. Saifuddin Nasution highlighted the persistence of illegal jetties and clandestine routes utilized for smuggling essential goods like cooking oil, gas, and cattle. He stressed that these illicit operations cannot be tolerated. He also underscored the transboundary nature of the security issue, emphasizing that it not only affects Malaysia but also Thailand. To this end, he disclosed a recent closed-door meeting with his Thai counterpart, Anutin Charnvirakul, Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister, to discuss collaborative strategies for addressing the common challenge.Saifuddin Nasution expressed confidence in the effectiveness of the measures implemented by the Kelantan police within a short timeframe. He assured that the Home Ministry remains steadfast in its support for all efforts aimed at maintaining robust border security. He pledged continued monitoring and full assistance to local authorities in augmenting security measures, emphasizing that this is a collective undertaking requiring contributions from all stakeholders.
