Malaysia's Transport Minister says a policy paper on the project will guide future discussions, but a final decision on its revival hinges on negotiations with Singapore.
The Malaysia n government is expected to decide on the revival of the Kuala Lumpur- Singapore High-Speed Rail ( HSR ) project by the end of December or early January, according to Transport Minister Anthony Loke. Loke stated that an upcoming policy paper on the project, which aims to reduce travel time between the two cities to 90 minutes, will not be the final verdict but will set the direction for future discussions.
This cross-border initiative can only move forward after engaging with the Singapore government. The HSR project, initially agreed upon in 2013 and slated for completion by 2026, was designed to link key stations in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, and Johor. However, the project faced scrutiny over costs and financial impact after a government change in 2018. Work was paused in 2018 and formally terminated in 2021 after disagreements between both countries on proposed changes. Despite setbacks, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed openness to revisiting the project if costs can be reduced. Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has also indicated willingness to consider new proposals related to the HSR
