Malaysian authorities seized millions of ringgit worth of illegal cosmetics in recent years. The Ministry of Health and other agencies actively combat the sale of unsafe and unapproved cosmetic products.

The Malaysian Health Ministry seized RM12 million worth of illegal cosmetics in 1,333 raids from 2021 to November 2024. The ministry also received 204 handovers of illegal cosmetics valued at RM3.2 million from police and the Customs Department. Additionally, the Pharmacy Enforcement Division took down 2,144 advertisements of unapproved or banned cosmetic products on popular e-marketplaces.

Imported pharmaceutical products are required to undergo quality control testing, with manufacturers responsible for releasing compliant batches. Product registration holders must submit samples for testing at recognised National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) panel laboratories before registration is approved. While the ministry implements strict regulations to ensure imported pharmaceutical and cosmetic products meet high safety and quality standards, some non-compliant products continue to be available on the market. Aesthetic dermatology expert Dr Lim Ing Kien advised consumers to check the NPRA notification number on product packaging, as it indicates approval by the ministry. He cautioned that some illegal cosmetic suppliers may insert numbers to evade detection and recommended buying from reputable pharmacies or authorized retailers, verifying product status on the NPRA website
