The Ministry of Health Malaysia's move to extend nurse working hours is criticized for potential risks to patient safety and nurse well-being.
The decision by the Ministry of Health Malaysia (KKM) to increase the working hours of nurses from 42 to 45 hours per week starting December 1st poses a risk to patient safety and health. MTUC President Mohd. Effendy Abdul Ghani expressed concern over the decision, stating that it was made without adequate discussions with key stakeholders like the Malaysia n Nurses Union (MNU).
He highlighted the lack of comprehensive dialogue with other professional bodies, and warned that increased workload without addressing existing challenges could elevate job pressure, burnout, and decrease job satisfaction. Furthermore, the mental well-being of nurses could suffer under excessive workload, potentially degrading the quality of patient care. Effendy also pointed out that longer working hours could drive nurses to seek better working conditions elsewhere, exacerbating the healthcare sector's shortage of staff. As a result, he urged the government to urgently engage in discussions with MNU and other relevant parties to reassess the decision
