The Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) in Malaysia is facing a significant challenge due to a growing number of commercial crime cases and a limited number of investigators.
On average, commercial crime investigators in Malaysia handle 48 investigation papers per year. This information comes from Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf, Director of the Commercial Crime Investigation Department ( CCID ), who stated that this figure is based on the 41,701 investigation papers opened last year. With a total of 875 investigators in the CCID , this translates to an average ratio of 1 investigator to 48 cases.
Ramli highlighted that this ratio presents a significant challenge for the CCID in combating the complexities of commercial crime, particularly with the evolving nature of technology. He noted that commercial crime cases are consistently increasing annually, with a 53.2% rise compared to five years ago. This surge in cases poses a considerable burden on the CCID, as the number of investigators has remained constant over the past five years. The Director emphasized that 48 investigation papers per year is not an ideal number for an investigator, excluding prior cases and other assigned tasks. He stressed the urgent need for intensive staff augmentation in 2025 to effectively address the growing number of commercial crime cases. While he couldn't specify the ideal number of additional personnel required, he acknowledged that the current situation is highly challenging. Notably, the value of losses incurred from commercial crime in 2024 reached RM3.11 billion, compared to RM2.11 billion in 2023, RM1.73 billion in 2022, RM2.20 billion in 2021, and RM2.06 billion in 2020
