Malaysia's aviation sector experienced a remarkable surge in growth during 2024, marked by the addition of new airlines, destinations, and increased passenger traffic. Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) played a pivotal role in this expansion, welcoming a diverse range of international carriers and connecting to numerous new destinations across Asia and beyond. Regional airports also benefited from the growth, with increased air traffic and new direct flights.
Malaysia experienced a significant surge in aviation growth during 2024, adding 12 new airlines, witnessing the resumption of 16 routes, and connecting to 24 new destinations. According to a statement released by Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), the nation's busiest international gateway, Kuala Lumpur International Airport ( KLIA ), welcomed numerous international carriers.
Regional airports also benefited from increased air traffic, with new direct flights to destinations across Asia and beyond. Among the 12 new airlines operating from KLIA were Air Macau, Iraqi Airways, Turkmenistan Airlines, Cambodia Airways, Qingdao Airlines, AirAsia Cambodia, Loong Air, and Air India. KLIA also saw the addition of new destinations, including Almaty, Ashgabat, Baghdad, Chiang Rai, Lam Dong, Labuan Bajo, Jaipur, Nairobi, Nanjing, and Vientiane. MAHB reported that a total of 73 foreign carriers and six local carriers (excluding freighters) now operate flights to 138 international and 31 domestic destinations within the Malaysia Airports network, demonstrating the continuous expansion of the nation's aviation sector. In 2024, the Malaysia Airports network, including Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International Airport (ISGA) in Türkiye, recorded over 135 million passenger movements, reaching 96.1% of 2019 levels. Domestically, airports handled 93.8 million passengers, achieving 89.1% of pre-pandemic levels. International traffic continued its upward trajectory with 49.6 million passengers or 93.1% of 2019 figures, despite challenges such as delayed aircraft deliveries and disruptions in maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services. The domestic sector remained stable, recording 44.2 million passengers or 85.1% of pre-pandemic levels. ISGA continued its growth trajectory, welcoming 41.9 million passengers, a 16.7% increase from 2019. Looking ahead to 2025, MAHB managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani stated that the airport operator aims to further enhance connectivity with the introduction of more than 10 new airlines, focusing on key markets in Asia and Europe. This strategy is designed to drive traffic growth as Malaysia prepares for Visit Malaysia 2026, reaffirming the commitment to connecting the nation to the world and delivering seamless travel experiences
