The government is implementing a 50% discount on toll rates for Class 1 vehicles during the Chinese New Year period, aiming to ease travel burdens while managing public expenditure.
The Malaysian government is offering a 50% discount on toll rates to coincide with the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations. This initiative, approved during today's Cabinet meeting, was announced by Works Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi. The minister had previously hinted at this decision earlier in the week, indicating a shift away from completely toll-free travel during festive seasons towards a more targeted approach.
While the discount doesn't eliminate toll payments entirely, as seen in past festive seasons, it still represents a significant financial outlay for the government. Alexander stated that the estimated cost of implementing this discount is approximately RM200 million. Similar to previous implementations of toll-free travel, the 50% discount will be available only on specific days and times. The discount period will commence at 12:01 AM on Monday, January 27, 2025, and conclude at 11:59 PM on Tuesday, January 28, 2025. The discount will be applicable at almost all toll plazas nationwide, with the exception of the Sultan Iskandar Building and Tanjung Kupang in Johor. It's important to note that this discount is limited to Class 1 vehicles only. The government's decision to implement a targeted approach to toll reductions during festive seasons reflects a desire to balance the need to alleviate travel burdens on citizens with the need to manage public expenditure. While the specifics of this new approach remain undisclosed, it's likely that the government will continue to evaluate and refine its policies to ensure a sustainable and equitable system
