Malaysia has become the first country to implement a groundbreaking 6-way 4G Multi Operator Core Network (MOCN) sharing agreement, marking a significant advancement in telecommunications collaboration.
Malaysia has achieved a significant milestone in telecommunications by becoming the first country to implement a 6-way 4G Multi Operator Core Network ( MOCN ) sharing agreement. This groundbreaking initiative, spearheaded by the Malaysia n Communications and Multimedia Commission ( MCMC ), involves six major telecommunications companies (telcos) — Celcom, Digi, Maxis, U Mobile, TM, and YTL Communications — collaborating to share network resources and infrastructure.
This multi-operator collaboration began with a memorandum of understanding signed in May last year in Kuala Kubu Bharu. The implementation, however, took time as telcos had to develop the necessary infrastructure for this unprecedented level of cooperation. Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, who launched the 6-Way 4G MOCN Network Sharing and Infrastructure Guidelines and inaugurated a telecommunications tower in Kuala Pilah on Monday (Jan 27), highlighted the success of this concept. He emphasized that no other country has seen competing companies establish a framework for such extensive collaboration, making Malaysia a global pioneer in this field. The 6-Way 4G MOCN project aims to improve connectivity, particularly in areas with limited internet access. The agreement focuses on two main methodologies: Passive Infrastructure Sharing, which involves sharing physical components like towers and poles, and Active Infrastructure Sharing, which entails sharing electronic components and signal processing within the network. This integrated approach enhances operational efficiency and accelerates the delivery of high-quality 4G services, benefiting the people and bridging the digital divide. The five initial locations for the 6-Way 4G MOCN are Ikon Tengkolok, Bukit Putus and Kem Pengakap Bukit Putus in Negeri Sembilan; Prima Gambang (Pahang); West Coast Expressway (WCE) Kota Seri Langat Toll Plaza, Banting (Selangor), and Tanjung Asam (Penang). Minister Fahmi expressed optimism that this initiative would foster closer cooperation among telcos, leading to improved internet access, especially in remote areas. He also urged stakeholders to raise awareness about the potential negative impact of social media on children and cautioned against online scams
