The Malaysian men's bowling team achieved a historic first, clinching the championship title at the International Bowling Federation (IBF) World Cup in Hong Kong. The team defeated Puerto Rico 3-2 in a thrilling final, marking their first victory since the team event was introduced in 2022.
Malaysia made history today at the International Bowling Federation ( IBF ) World Cup in Kowloon, Hong Kong, as their men's bowling team clinched their first-ever championship title. The national team demonstrated their skill and determination, overcoming a formidable challenge from Puerto Rico to secure a 3-2 victory. The thrilling match unfolded at the Top Bowl, Kai Tak Sports Park, with scores fluctuating between the two teams.
The Malaysian quartet, consisting of Timmy Tan, Ahmad Muaz Mohd Fishol, Muhammad Rafiq Ismail, and Tun Hakim Tun Hasnul Azam, delivered impressive performances throughout the match, ultimately triumphing with scores of 203-179, 216-257, 197-180, 185-222, and 227-161.This historic victory marks the first title for the Malaysian men's squad since the team event was introduced in 2022 at the World Cup in Queensland, Australia. In their previous appearance, they narrowly missed out on the championship, falling to the Philippines in the quarter-finals with a 2-3 loss. The team's journey to the final saw them overcome Kuwait with a convincing 3-1 victory (205-153, 159-201, 245-206, and 234-233). Meanwhile, Puerto Rico staged a remarkable comeback, avenging their previous year's 1-3 final defeat to the United States with a 3-1 win (186-175, 158-234, 200-196, and 210-177).However, the Malaysian women's team fell short of achieving a double victory, losing to the United States in a closely contested final. Despite a valiant effort, they were unable to secure a win against the reigning champions, with scores finalizing at 195-214, 222-211, 176-198, 220-210, and 180-211. Led by Asia's number one bowler, Sin Li Jane, alongside Natasha Mohamed Roslan, Siti Safiyah Amirah Abdul Rahman, and Gillian Lim, the women's team had previously defeated Macau with scores of 202-184, 211-178, and 205-176 to advance to the final. In the previous edition in 2022, the women's team secured a bronze medal after defeating the United States 3-2 in the medal playoff. The 2022 tournament marked a significant shift for the World Cup, with a revamped structure emphasizing match play and introducing team competitions. This move away from the original individual-only format, which had been in place since 1965, added a new dimension to the competition
