Malaysia has officially recognized 117 food items as national heritage, reflecting the country's diverse and flavorful culinary traditions.
The National Heritage Department of Malaysia has officially recognized 117 food items as national heritage under its Declaration of Heritage Objects 2025. This year's list is considerably larger than the previous year's, which only included 10 food items. The newly designated heritage foods encompass a wide range of popular Malaysian dishes, including capati, rojak, nasi minyak, apam, and durian.
The list, published on January 17, 2025, and signed by Commissioner Mohamad Muda Bahadin, is categorized into 12 distinct groups: Staple Food, Variety of Cooked Dishes, Traditional Cake, Appetiser, Porridge, Dessert/Confectionary, Snack, Spicy Sauce, Soup, Bread, Drinks, and Fruit. Some notable entries in the list include traditional dishes like Ayam Masak Buah Keluak, Laksa, Rendang, and Nasi Lemak, along with a variety of snacks like Kueh Lapis, Kuih Ketayap, and Rojak. The list also includes beverages like Air Janda and Tuak, and fruits like Durian and Mangosteen. This comprehensive recognition aims to preserve and celebrate the rich culinary heritage of Malaysia
