The Malaysian government has clarified its stance on proposed guidelines regarding Muslim participation in non-Muslim events, emphasizing its commitment to national unity and the need for all policies to receive Cabinet approval. The Cabinet decided against implementing the proposed guidelines, which sparked concerns and confusion among Malaysians from various religious backgrounds.
On Wednesday, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Na’im Mokhtar announced plans to introduce new rules requiring organizers to seek approval from religious authorities before inviting Muslim leaders to non-Muslim religious celebrations and funerals. This sparked concerns and confusion among Malaysia ns from various religious backgrounds.
In response, the Malaysian government clarified its stance, emphasizing its commitment to national unity and the need for all policies to receive Cabinet approval. In a joint statement, Datuk Na’im Mokhtar and Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang, the Ministers in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) and National Unity, respectively, stated that the Cabinet had thoroughly reviewed the proposed guidelines on Muslim participation in non-Muslim events. They explained that the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) had drafted these guidelines in response to concerns raised by Muslims about potentially encountering religious elements at non-Muslim gatherings. However, the Cabinet emphasized that while Jakim could offer advice to Muslims on safeguarding their faith, this advice wouldn't automatically constitute official policy. The Cabinet also stressed that any policy affecting the nation must prioritize national unity and secure Cabinet approval before implementation. Recognizing the confusion and concerns generated, the Cabinet decided not to proceed with the proposed guidelines.Instead, the Interfaith Harmony Committee, comprising representatives from various faiths, will further discuss the matter. The committee's first meeting of the year is scheduled for this month, aiming to gather input from members representing Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, Sikhism, Taoism, and Baha'i. The National Unity Ministry will continue its Harmony Dialogue initiative, promoting interfaith understanding and cooperation.
