Some of the storm activity has the potential to become severe, carrying the risk of gusty winds, heavy rain and hail.
An explosive outbreak of spring thunderstorms are expected throughout much of eastern Australia over the next 48 hours, in areas including Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and Hobart. The most significant storm activity is expected across south-eastern parts of NSW
The sudden turnaround after well-below average storm activity in October is due to a change in wind direction, to a favourable flow off the Coral Sea. The odd severe storm could also form over far southern NSW, and a few afternoon rumbles are possible in Canberra and Western Sydney. Melbourne and Hobart are both likely to see lightning and thunder, peaking in the latter half of the afternoon.Storms will again develop across eastern Australia on Thursday, with the strongest across southern NSW.
But there is also a "distinct possibility" a few supercells, the most dangerous of all storms, could develop in a number of areas, according to Mr Hines. "And what that does is it puts a little tilt to the thunderstorm, which stops the storm collapsing in on itself so it can last longer."Sydney is likely to see thunderstorms arriving from the west on Thursday afternoon which could trigger a warning for severe weather. The change to a more humid wind regime has already delivered much-needed rainfall to parts of Queensland and northern NSW.
