7NEWS: Seven arrested after wild police chase shuts Melbourne’s Eastern Fwy
’s Eastern Fwy on Friday morning, as officers worked to stop an allegedly stolen car speeding up to 150km/h.
The high-speed police chase saw air wing called in as officers tracked two cars through multiple suburbs southeast of Melbourne overnight.Watch the latest news and stream for free onPatrolling officers, who were working as part of an operation targeting aggravated burglaries and associated car thefts, spotted a white BMW wagon with stolen plates travelling at high speeds on the Monash Fwy, Dandenong about 2am.
Police helicopter support quickly joined the chase and tracked the BMW to Narre Warren, where a grey Mercedes joined the incident, allegedly reaching speeds up to 150km/h.Police allege both vehicles were stolen during recent aggravated burglaries.Police used stop-sticks — spike kits designed to penetrate tyres and deflate them within 20 to 30 seconds — to target the car in Heidelberg; however, it continued driving on two wheels towards the Eastern Fwy in Kew.
The Mercedes eventually came to a stop and police arrested seven people from inside, who are now all assisting police with their inquiries.The allegedly stolen Mercedes reached speeds up to 150km/h with police hot on its trail.Motorists were urged to avoid the area and allow for extra travel time as authorities closed the outbound lanes between Burke Rd and Bulleen Rd.
