An alleged stolen BMW and Mercedes Benz reached speeds of up to 150km/h before one car was dumped and the other was stopped when police successfully deployed road spikes.
Victoria Police officers were on patrol as part of Operation Trinity - to crack down on aggravated burglaries and car thefts - when they spotted a speeding BMW wagon with stolen plates on the Monash Freeway at Dandenong about 2am.
At some point in the pursuit the BMW was dumped at Mullum Mullum Tunnel, with the occupants of the car jumping into the Mercedes and speeding off. Officers pounced on the group and arrested the seven people who are being interviewed. The sex and ages are not known at this stage. The Mercedes was towed away and the busy thoroughfare was opened just before the early morning peak hour traffic.Victoria Police said Operation Trinity has been focused on targeting aggravated burglaries and related car thefts following the COVID-19 pandemic.
