The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has expanded its investigation into vehicle inspection syndicates, arresting 13 officers in Kuala Lumpur on suspicion of receiving bribes.
The Malaysian Anti- Corruption Commission ( MACC ) has arrested 13 vehicle inspection officers at a vehicle inspection centre in Kuala Lumpur on suspicion of involvement in a syndicate for heavy vehicle inspection approvals. The suspects, aged between 20 and 40, were arrested while present at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya to provide evidence. This brings the total number of arrests in this case to 22, including 19 vehicle inspection officers, an agent, and two runners.
Preliminary investigations indicate that all suspects allegedly received bribes ranging from RM150 to RM1,500 per month in cash from runners for facilitating vehicle inspections at their duty posts. The arrests follow the detention of six vehicle inspectors last Monday and the questioning of an agent previously handed over by the Road Transport Department (JPJ). The MACC's investigations into vehicle inspection syndicates will be expanded to encompass other inspection centres nationwide, not just those in Kuala Lumpur. MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki stated that they will collaborate with the JPJ and Puspakom to examine other inspection centres throughout the country. The aim is to eradicate corruption at these centres. Azam believes the first suspect, who was provided to them by the JPJ, is the mastermind behind the operation. He added that further arrests are possible to aid in the ongoing investigation
