Peter Dutton and Anthony Albanese have been locked in a public argument about releasing more “detail” on the Voice.The most outspoken Liberal supporters of the Voice, such as NSW Senator Andrew Bragg and Tasmanian MP Bridget Archer, will be free to do whatever they want regardless of the party’s decision.
It is highly doubtful that any of the handful of Liberal frontbenchers who support the Voice would be willing to resign over a position to bind the frontbench. They didn’t resign from Scott Morrison’s cabinet for holding the position that the VoiceWhen former indigenous affairs minister Ken Wyatt took the matter to cabinet during the last term, he was opposed by just about everyone.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his advisors have come to the position that Dutton will back the “no” case regardless of how much detail they release, so there is no point changing their strategy merely to call his bluff. Regardless of whether Dutton binds his frontbench or not, it is difficult to see him personally backing the “yes” side at this point. Butnow outlined an option for Albanese that mirrors the Coalition’s approach in 2017Before Australians went to a vote on same-sex marriage, there was a full exposure draft bill and senate inquiry report recommending amendments.
