Cardinals, bishops and church officials from around the world gathered at the holy site just four days after the Australian died from complications following a routine surgery.

George Pell, one of the most influential and divisive figures within the Catholic Church of recent decades, has been farewelled at St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican.

“May God unite his soul with those of all the saints and faithful departed,” the 86-year-old Francis said in Italian. “May he be given a merciful judgment so that, redeemed from death, freed from punishment, reconciled to the Father, carried in the arms of the Good Shepherd, he may deserve to enter fully into everlasting happiness in the company of the eternal King together with all the saints.”

Pell’s dark brown wooden coffin had been lying in state before the funeral where, even in death, the late cardinal was fighting for the traditionalist cause. On Wednesday Italian journalist Sandro Magister, a friend of Pell who has a long track record of receiving leaked Vatican documents, published an, that it was Pell who had given him permission to publish it under the pseudonym “Demos” – meaning “The People” in Greek.

But one friend of Pell, Jesuit Father Joseph Fessio, founder and editor of Ignatius Press, a Catholic publishing house in San Francisco, voiced scepticism that Pell authored the memo.
