Letters to the Editor

Wow! The magnitude of Pi Beta Phi’s fresh support has left this literacy program speechless!— The arrival of professional cricket here marks another milestone for North Texas. It creates an opportunity for us to show the world that we truly appreciate diversity. Let us hope the acceptance of the world’s second most popular sport does better than soccer, the world’s most popular sport, which didn’t fare that well when it first came to Texas.

Soccer, or football, as it is called by the rest of the world, did not have a resounding debut in Dallas-Fort Worth, probably because it was played mostly overseas and because of the devotion to American football in Texas. But soccer is now embedded in our local culture to the point where Dallas was named one of 16 host cities for the World Cup in 2026. Let the matches begin.

— As I have written in years past, I would be remiss not to address the continued successful effort maintaining the yuccas in the North Central Expressway median. Considering the challenge, for the third year in a row, whoever is responsible has done yeoman’s work turning this heretofore unruly collection of trash, broken car pieces and weeds into a refreshing landscaping miracle.Perhaps thinning a bit, the plants seem to be quite happy now for a record three years.

While we as a city have many more significant issues with which to deal, this is an excellent example of what a great city can accomplish with only a small effort and impressive indication of what a small, seemingly insignificant effort can accomplish.
