County Court Judge Mark Gamble told sisters Dassi Erlich and Elly Sapper their ‘predatory’ former principal Leifer should feel guilty of sexually abusing them.
Malka Leifer, former principal of an ultra-Orthodox Jewish school in Melbourne, has been sentenced to 15 years in jail for sexually abusing two former students.
The jury found Leifer guilty of 18 rape and sexual assault charges and not guilty of nine. She was cleared of all charges relating to a third sister, Nicole Meyer.Gamble said Leifer abused the sisters at a time when they did not understand the sexual nature of the offending due to their ultra-Orthodox upbringing.“In effect, each of them had no understanding of the sexual nature of the acts Mrs Leifer was engaging in,” Gamble said.
Gamble said the children were locked in a dark cupboard for lengthy periods, told they were no longer part of the family and dumped at a park. Food was often withheld. “Whether she wants to or not, she will have to answer for her crimes, she will have to accept what the judge says,” Meyer said.Meyer said she and her sisters had been discussing the repercussions for them and other victims throughout Australia, and the world.
“There’s an element of tension that can be felt, as if they are expecting a further twist in this prolonged, sordid case. Personally, it’s really difficult to believe that this case is on the cusp of being concluded,” he said.
