Elon Musk's tunneling company could win a contract worth up to $55 million for a project to speed visitors through the sprawling Las Vegas Convention Center

Elon Musk’sis already pursuing tunnel projects in Los Angeles and Chicago, but the showy billionaire entrepreneur may have found a particularly apt use of his tube-based transportation tech. Las Vegas officials want him to build a people mover at the city’s convention center.it’s recommending that the Boring Co.

“Our destination thrives on innovation and reinvention and The Boring Company’s concept allows us to continue providing the world-class experience our guests and clients have come to expect and move people in an efficient and cost-effective manner with advanced technology,” LVCVA President and CEO said in a statement.Las Vegas Convention and Visitor Authority

For all his tunneling hype, to date Musk has only completed a 1.14-mile test “Loop” tunnel system adjacent to Boring Co.’s Hawthorne, California, headquarters. At its December 2018 unveiling, Musk demonstrated how Tesla Model X SUV’s could travel on rails installed in the tunnel, a less futuristic approach than the sleek, electric sled carriers he’d initially proposed. He said the project’s cost was less than $10 million a mile including the tunnel’s lighting and rails.
