The government has announced a suite of major tobacco industry reforms as they fight the serious health impacts of smoking. But at the same time, the Albanese government are being accused of neglecting the health of the environment, with the Greens and Independents attacking Labor's climate policy.
Health Minister Mark Butler says it's time for more aggressive laws to stop people from smoking.
Professor Emily Banks is an expert in chronic disease and tobacco control and chairs the National Health and Medical Research Council Research Impact Committee. If the legislation is approved, the industry will have a 12 month transition period to incorporate the reforms."More than 250 thousand Australians are predicted to die over the next 20 years from smoking-related cancers alone. And this is a really truly unacceptable statistic because smoking-related cancers are entirely preventable. So parliament really can and must intervene and support this legislation in order to change the course of that trajectory.

The Greens had held out on giving their support to Labor’s housing bill until their demands were met, which led to a months-long stalemate within parliament. The minor party was pushing the Albanese government to increase the annual housing spending to $2.5 billion while demanding stronger rental restrictions.
