The prime minister rebuffed the eleventh-hour proposal to cancel the October 14 vote on the Voice. The Australian Electoral Commission is preparing to open postal votes after the writs were issued.

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton asked Albanese whether he would withdraw the proposal before it was too late.“You have completely mishandled your Canberra Voice proposal,” Dutton told Albanese, adding that the outcome would not bring a moment of unity for the nation.

Voters will also be able to attend hundreds of early voting centres in the two weeks before October 14, or cast their ballots at thousands of polling places due to open from 8am to 6pm on polling day. Resolve director Jim Reed said the gap reflected a “rebel frustration” among No voters who were determined to have a say, and this meant the Yes campaigners would have to mobilise their supporters.

“Referendums are very difficult to win and there are a lot of people out there that are also facing some very significant issues in their households – we know cost of living is a big issue.”

The comments come after the leader of the opposition said he would hold a second referendum if the Voice were to fail, and if he were elected in the next term. “The leader of the opposition of course has since then committed to if he’s ever elected prime minister, to have another referendum if this referendum is defeated,” Mr Albanese said during Question Time on Monday. “Despite the fact that a majority of the process – occurred under the former government. “It was the former government that established a process under Tony Abbott, it was the former government that appointed Tom Calma and Marcia Langton, it was the former government that appointed Julian Leeser and Patrick Dodson to share the joint parliamentary enquiry. “It’s unfortunate that the leader of the opposition has chosen politics over substance.”

His spokeswoman Shadow Minister for Indigenous Australians Jacinta Nampijinpa Price did not seem as enthusiastic when asked about the second referendum later in the week.
