Charles’ first official state visit began with a 21-gun salute and fly over by military jets in a rare German display of ceremony.
He shocked onlookers by delivering the first half of his speech in German, where he also revealed the trip was his 40th visit to Germany. Charles’ comments followed a less light-hearted speech by President Steinmeier, who mentioned his sadness regarding Britain’s decision to exit the European Union. A picture of Diana dancing with John Travolta in the White House became an iconic photograph of the Reagan era and increased the world’s fascination with Britain’s Royal Family.
